Local Firms Partner To Green The Office Environment
Portland, OR: Ecowork LLC, a Southwest Washington-based green office furniture producer, has appointed SmithCFI in Portland its preferred dealer for the Ecowork EG sustainable office furniture line.

Interest in sustainability has advanced beyond personal lifestyle choices to fundamental decisions on how to do business. Forward-thinking companies are seeking better, more sustainable choices in every aspect of their business, including the nature of the buildings they create and the way they furnish them.

Ecowork LLC of North Bonneville, Washington provides an award-winning modular workspace system utilizing 95% recycled and rapidly renewable materials. The product line is a competitive commercial offering with a green, modern and expressive style. The Ecowork EG work surfaces use durable "wheatboard" made from waste wheat straw and a non-formaldehyde binder. Legs are produced from recycled cardboard spun into durable and heavy duty tubes. Key suppliers located in the greater Portland area include: Lumber Products, Pacific Paper Tube, and Forest Technologies of Salem. The furniture products are also assembled in North Bonneville, Washington.

SmithCFI is the premier commercial office furniture supplier in Oregon. Recognizing the interest in green building practices, our company has taken action to be the Northwest leader in environmentally-friendly furnishings. "As a community, Portland stands out nationally with its interest in sustainability. We share these values and are committed to serve our clients with a comprehensive selection of green products", says Tom McDougal, Vice President of SmithCFI. The dealership carries over 200 other furniture lines, many of which offer sustainable content. Ecowork has appointed SmithCFI's Shannon Ferrigno to lead their efforts in this area.

Interest in green buildings and interiors has been supported through the efforts of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), formed in 1993. Located in the Ecotrust Building, the USGBC has an important presence in Portland. The organization has established guidelines for green buildings and interiors, addressing a number of construction aspects including core materials used, energy factors, and indoor air quality. Ecowork EG furniture is designed to comply with these standards.
